|Commisioned by the city of Huntington Beach, this is a sculpture of an ocean wave, complete with a beautiful, hand-built, miniature longboard riding the cresting sea foam. The longboard was created by my partner in this project, David Labonte. You can see the city logo embedded into the resin of the board... a nice touch I think.
It was important to be able to remove the surfboard to allow for ease of transporting the sculpture. And so, I had to design for that in the actual sculpure of the wave. This was done by creating a groove that was lined with white felt to allow the board to be slipped into place amongst the sea foam.
I shaped the wave out of dense-pack foam and coated it with a polyresin glaze. I then hand-painted the wave using acrylics and finished the piece with a final coat of clear, high gloss enamel to give it the "wet" look.
