Commisioned by the city of Huntington Beach, this is a sculpture of an ocean wave, complete with a beautiful, hand-built, miniature longboard – riding the cresting sea foam. The longboard was created by my partner in this project, David Labonte. You can see the city logo embedded into the resin of the board... a nice touch I think.

It was important to be able to remove the surfboard to allow for ease of transporting the sculpture. And so, I had to design for that in the actual sculpure of the wave. This was done by creating a groove that was lined with white felt to allow the board to be slipped into place amongst the sea foam.

I shaped the wave out of dense-pack foam and coated it with a polyresin glaze. I then hand-painted the wave using acrylics and finished the piece with a final coat of clear, high gloss enamel to give it the "wet" look.
